Coba

Cobá is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Yucatan. Built between two lakes during 600-900 AD, Cobá was at one time a very large city spread over 80 square kilometers. The main pyramid, Nohoch Mul meaning 'large hill', is 42 meters tall (138 feet) and is the highest in the Yucatan peninsula, taller than the pyramid of Chichen Itza. Nohoch Mul is the only pyramid in the Yucatan that people are still allowed to climb. There is another pyramid located near the entrance of the ruins, known as Templo de la Iglesia or 'Temple of the Church'. Cobá is located among lush dense jungle and many sites are still uncovered and buried under trees. A guided tour to the archaeological site of Coba lasts about two hours. Palace Resorts vacation packages includes tours of Coba as one of their free tours. more details...
